Because Safety Matters

Under a second from a held drain to a pump that has let go.

One valve, three jobs: anti-entrapment, surge suppressor and drain winterization device. Swipe through what happens when a suction outlet is blocked.

  1. Blocked

    A drain is covered

A body, a limb, hair or a loose strap closes over a suction outlet. With a single main drain, the pump keeps pulling and vacuum climbs in the line.

  2. Exploded drawing of a Breather valve: body, seal disc, spring and limit switch housing

    Lift

    The seal disc lifts

Inside the Breather an orthogonal seal system, a rubber o-ring mounted on a moving disc with dual face and radial sealing, holds tight until the vacuum passes its set point. Then it opens.

  3. Breather valve and vacuum gauge threaded into the drain port of a white pump housing

    Air

    Air floods the suction side

Air rapidly fills the pump suction side, the pump loses prime, and the hold on the drain lets go. The Breather III also cuts the pump through its limit switch and control box.

  4. Reset

    Back on guard

Breather I resets itself. Breather II stays open until someone pulls its release chain, so the pool gets checked first. Breather III restarts only after a three minute time delay, with an audible alert.

  5. Every start-up

    Surge suppressor

The same valve protects the pump and filtration equipment against shocks and vibrations during pump start-ups, for less maintenance, less downtime and longer equipment life.

  6. End of season

    Drain winterization

To winterize, remove the SVRS until all of the water in the pump has drained, then thread it back in for spring.

Which Breather fits my pump?

Three lines, twelve versions. Every one comes Standard or Adjustable, with a Center or Offset port, and carries a 3 year warranty. Adjustable models are compliance tested up to 200 feet.

Signed into law

December 19, 2007

The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act requires anti-entrapment devices on every public pool and spa in the United States. A public pool with a single main drain, other than an unblockable drain, needs one or more further devices, a safety vacuum release system among them.

Read the Act and the history

“My daughter never should have died. It’s catastrophic when a child dies in any way, all the more so when it’s preventable.”

Nancy Baker, mother of Graeme Baker

How a drain holds on

Body Entrapment
A section of the torso becomes entrapped.
Limb Entrapment
An arm or leg is pulled into an open drain pipe.
Hair Entrapment or Entanglement
Hair is pulled in and wrapped around the grate of the drain cover.
Mechanical
Jewelry or part of the bather's clothing gets caught in the drain or the grate.

Questions installers ask

Before you thread one in.

“A true invention! Great company and great people! We have installed the Breather I in our home and we feel safe when our kids are playing around the drain.”
michael scarpellini, Google review

Still unsure which model? Tech support: (818) 701-6204

If a body, limb or hair blocks a suction outlet, vacuum builds in the line. A Breather senses that rise, opens, and lets air rush into the suction side of the pump. The pump loses prime and the hold on the drain is released. The Breather III also shuts the pump off through its control box.

Breather I resets automatically and suits suction lift or submerged suction installs. Breather II resets by hand with its release chain and is for suction lift installs only. Breather III is electronic, with a limit switch and control box that stop the pump. Each comes in a Center or Offset port, and the ADJ versions are adjustable and compliance tested up to 200 feet. Tech support on (818) 701-6204 can help you choose.

No tools are required for the Breather I and II. You remove the existing pump drain plug and hand screw the Breather valve into its place. Vacless puts it at less than 5 minutes. The Breather III adds a limit switch and control box, so it needs wiring by an installer.

Vacless designs the Breather for pumps from 0.5 to 10.0 horsepower, on hot tubs, spas, fountains, wading pools and residential or commercial pools.

No. Vacless says its systems should always be used in conjunction with an approved anti-entrapment drain cover. Nothing replaces parental supervision, but multiple layers of protection are the best way to prevent main drain entrapment.
